Through our HP Catalyst Initiative project we are collaborating with the National ICT Innovation and Integration Centre, which is part of the Ministry of Education in Kenya. This centre was officially launched in August 2011 and is supported by the VVOB, the Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance, a non-profit organization. The Centre’s mission is to develop a centre of excellence to identify and drive ICT innovations and their integration in all aspects of education within and outside the Ministry of Education.
We are in the process of establishing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Centre as we work in preparing preservice teachers able to integrate technology in meaningful ways into their classroom practice to support teaching and learning, and work alongside the Centre in their mission of working with inservice teachers in the same way.
The Centre has trained “champion” teachers in each constituency in Kenya (there are 210 constituencies). These champions are secondary teachers from across the subject areas who are working at integrating technology into their classroom practice and are working within their constituency to develop a plan to train the teachers in their constituency to do the same.
The photos are from a recent meeting we had with staff members at the Centre and from a workshop with 15 champion teachers from around Nairobi and the teachers working with us through the HP Catalyst Initiative from Kenya High and Nairobi School. During the workshop, the Education Secretary Prof. Godia stopped by with the Belgium Ambassador to Kenya to view the Centre and its activities.
