Year 2: April 2012 – March 2013

Scholar Exchanges

•  Eleven scholars from Kenyatta University each spent two months at Syracuse University during the period from April – November 2012. The scholars observed classes, used the library, and worked on project activities. Each exchange scholar also participated in a professional conference while in the United States. The exchange scholars from Kenyatta University who spent two months in Syracuse University are David Khatete, Adelheid Bwire, Agnes Gathumbi, John Kimemia, John Maundu, Henry Ayot, Sophia Ndethiu, Ndichu Gitau, Nicholas Twoli, Samson Ondigi, and Marguerite Miheso-O’Connor.

•  Five scholars from the Syracuse University team spent time at Kenyatta University as exchange scholars. Joanna Masingila (faculty member at SU) was at KU for eight weeks in June and July, Alan Foley (faculty member at SU) was at KU for two weeks in June, Penina Kamina (faculty member at SUNY Oneonta) was at KU for five weeks in June and July, Moses Ochanji (faculty member at California State University-San Marcos) was at KU for four weeks in July, and Zaline Roy-Campbell (faculty member at SU) was at KU for five weeks in September and October. These scholars led professional development workshops, and participated in research work and other project activities. SU graduate assistant Yan Huang was also at KU for eight weeks in June and July to assist with project activities.

Professional Development Workshops

•  In June 2012, a series of professional development workshops on using technology were held over two weeks for all faculty members in the Department of Educational Communication and Technology.

•  In January 2013, a three-day workshop on designing effective presentations was held for all faculty members in the Department of Educational Communication and Technology.

Stakeholders’ Meeting

•   We held a stakeholders’ meeting, jointly with the University of Nairobi and Colorado State University partnership project, on February 10, 2012 at the Kenya Institute of Education in Nairobi, Kenya.

“Sandwich degree” Participants

•   Kenyatta University faculty members and KU doctoral students Bernard Mugo and Michael Waititu are spending a year at Syracuse University (from August 2011 to August 2012) taking courses, participating in seminars, and working with faculty members on collaborative research, teaching and professional development projects.

Joint Steering Committee Meetings

•  Members of the Syracuse University partnership team, Joanna Masingila, Moses Ochanji, and Jeff Rozelle, traveled to Kenyatta University in January 2012 for meetings of the joint steering committee.

•   Syracuse University partnership team members Joanna MasingilaZaline Roy-Campbell, and Penina Kamina traveled to Kenyatta University in July 2011 for meetings of the joint steering committee and to participate in the 2nd International Conference on Education co-sponsored by Kenyatta University and Syracuse University. A number of other Syracuse University faculty members and doctoral students also participated in the conference.

•   Kenyatta University faculty members David Khatete, John Kimemia and Sophie Ndethiu traveled to Syracuse University in early June 2011 for meetings of the joint steering committee.

Scholar Exchanges

•   Joanna Masingila was on research leave from Syracuse University and worked with partnership colleagues at Kenyatta University from July through December 2011.

•   Moses Ochanji was on research leave from California State University – San Marcos and worked with partnership colleagues at Kenyatta University from January through July 2011.

Professional Development Workshops

•  During Year 1, professional development workshops on (1) teaching large classes, (2) supporting all learners, and (3) integrating technology into teaching were held for all faculty members in the Department of Educational Communication and Technology.

2nd International Conference on Education

•   Kenyatta University and Syracuse University co-sponsored the 2nd International Conference on Education, held at the Kenyatta University Conference Centre July 20-22, 2011.
